Loom is a video messaging platform for fast, effective async communication across teams and enterprises.
During 2023, Loom’s video messaging grew 37% in view, with 49M AI-enhanced videos created in 2024. However, as async video became standard practice, major platforms like Zoom, and Slack were adding video recording features, while other were pulling head with more advanced editing and recording features—leaving Loom behind.
With a 25M user base, Loom had the potential to stand out by offering seamless, advanced features without overwhelming users.
As the sole designer on this project. I led the full UX research & design of this project.

To gain a better understanding of the problem to tackle and where Loom was positioned in the market, I conducted a competitive analysis and SWOT analysis. I also scanned through user reviews and found patterns indicating frustration with limited editing tools and a desire for more advanced features.
Without these features, Loom risked losing users to competitors that offered better editing tools.

To validate my assumptions and better understand the user problem, I interviewed 6 past and current Loom users. The goal was to pinpoint the exact frustrations around Loom's current offering, and learn what users truly needed.
It was totally unclear at fist, two key findings stood out as I analysis the insights:

Before the interviews, the problem seemed to be about offering advanced editing tools to help Loom keep up with competitors.
However, I discovered that while users often relied on external tools or retook their videos to achieve professional-quality results, they truly appreciated Loom's ease of use. This revealed the challenge of introducing powerful features while maintaining simplicity. It led me to reframe the problem:

COMBINING SMART EDITING WITH CUSTOMIZATION
COMBINING SMART EDITING WITH CUSTOMIZATION
With those insights in hand, I analyzed how competitors were solving editing challenges—what worked, and what risked overcomplicating things. I then used those learnings to create a story map with two key epics that guided my design process, before sketching out design iterations.
I ended up choosing the 4th iteration to move forward. It integrated seamlessly with Loom’s existing features, enhanced design clarity for users, and left room for more advanced features—if Loom decides to add more in the future.
In my heuristic evaluation on editing, I identified a few design components that felt a bit off, which I marked as 3-4 in terms of severity. I’ve incorporated these insights into my mid-fi prototype for further testing.
As I reviewed Loom’s early 2025 release, I also noticed they had introduced new features (like overlays and closed captions). While their investment in editing wasn’t fully there yet, these low-hanging fruit features aligned with my direction, reassuring me that I was on the right track.

With those insights in hand, I analyzed how competitors were solving editing challenges—what worked, and what risked overcomplicating things. I then used those learnings to create a story map with two key epics that guided my design process, before sketching out design iterations.
I ended up choosing the 4th iteration to move forward. It integrated seamlessly with Loom’s existing features, enhanced design clarity for users, and left room for more advanced features—if Loom decides to add more in the future.
In my heuristic evaluation on editing, I identified a few design components that felt a bit off, which I marked as 3-4 in terms of severity. I’ve incorporated these insights into my mid-fi prototype for further testing.
As I reviewed Loom’s early 2025 release, I also noticed they had introduced new features (like overlays and closed captions). While their investment in editing wasn’t fully there yet, these low-hanging fruit features aligned with my direction, reassuring me that I was on the right track.
